Triangle Breathing
Four seconds in, four held, four out. The simplest technique with a hold, and where you first meet holds in the app.
4 min read
Four seconds in through the nose. Hold for four. Four seconds out through the nose. Start the next cycle without waiting.
Three steps, all equal. That is where the name comes from.
What it is good for
The hold slows the breath down. Four-four-four comes to five breaths a minute — inside the range where the measured effects of slow breathing are seen.
Its second job is about attention. A counted rhythm gives the mind something to hold on to. In free breathing attention drifts easily; in counted breathing drifting becomes harder. That is why it helps before work that needs focus.
Why before Box
Box Breathing has two holds: one with full lungs and one with empty lungs. The second — waiting with empty lungs — feels harder than the first to most people, and it breaks the rhythm.
Triangle is the version without that second hold. It is the gentlest way to meet holds. Once it starts to feel comfortable, moving to Box becomes easy; that is why the unlock order in the app runs from Triangle to Box.
How to do it
Sit upright, shoulders loose. Breathe in through the nose for four seconds, letting the belly rise.
Hold for four seconds. Holding is not locking: don't close your throat, just stop the breath. Keep your shoulders and jaw loose.
Breathe out through the nose for four seconds. As the exhale ends, move straight into the next inhale — there is no empty hold in this technique.
Common mistakes
Squeezing the breath into the chest during the hold. Hold loosely. If you feel pressure in your chest, you took in too much.
Waiting after the exhale. If you are coming from Box Breathing this can be a reflex. In Triangle the next cycle starts the moment the exhale ends.
Taking in more than fits in four seconds. You don't have to fill your lungs. Take in as much as you comfortably can in four seconds.
How the app measures it
The inhale and exhale are through the nose, so the sound is low — the thresholds are set for that.
The hold phase is measured separately: if a sound is heard in that window, air is counted as having escaped, and it appears as its own line in the report. A small leak during the hold is normal in early sessions, and holding loosely rather than trying to lock it shut is what fixes it.
Who should take care
If you feel dizzy during a hold, skip the hold and breathe normally. The app doesn't hide this technique from anyone who marks a tendency to dizziness in the intake, but it does remind you that the hold can be skipped.
